Black Friday: the (online) shopping event of the year that is all about inflated prices and sky-high, often misleading, discounts. Discounts sometimes up to 80%. Online deals that encourage impulse purchases after which you are left with unused or returnable products. The result? A huge burden on delivery services and not least the environment due to all those extra emissions.
As a brand trying to contribute to a more sustainable industry, you understand that this makes the hairs on our necks stand straight up. Therefore we rename Black Friday to GREEN Friday. A sustainable alternative without sky-high discounts and aimed at raising consumer awareness.
Green Friday is the sustainable alternative to Black Friday. Whereas Black Friday mainly encourages people to consume as much as possible and thus make purchases that they do not need at all, Green Friday is about awareness and making fewer, or no, purchases. Black Friday in 2022 generated record sales of €300 million. Online, this is a 70% increase over a regular Friday. You can imagine the impact this will have. From the extra pressure on delivery services to the, less visible, pressure on the environment. On Green Friday we reflect together on this high level of overconsumption and create awareness that it can be done differently. No extreme discounts, no buying unnecessary products and doing something back for the environment.
The main difference between Black Friday and Green Friday is the intention and thought behind it. Many consumers consciously shop during Black Friday for the - for them - best deals and highest discounts. However, some consumers like to make a more conscious and sustainable choice and know that discounts of, for example, 80% simply cannot be right. Shopkeepers and web shops are committed to sustainable actions and environmentally friendly activities during Green Friday. There are stores that close their doors completely, plant trees together, go on forest walks or slightly discount sustainable products.
Below we give you three tips to be smart with your money, and the environment, during Black and Green Friday.
The most important thing you can do is ask yourself: do I really need this? Do I really need that new TV, cell phone or blender, or do I just want it because it's heavily discounted?
Every year Black Friday falls on the day after American Thanksgiving. So every year you know when it is coming again. It turns out that 50% of the Dutch consciously wait with postponing purchases until the Black Friday deals. A logical choice for us, something you already know you need, you might as well get it at a nice discount. These are usually the products you don't buy on impulse, but because you need them.
After the Black Friday period period begins the December month, the month when the holidays and coziness take center stage. Black Friday is also seen as the beginning of the season for Christmas shopping. Chances are you will be shopping online for this as well, either for yourself or for someone else. Don't wait until the last minute to make those Christmas and St. Nicholas purchases and avoid the stress of having your packages delivered too late for the holidays. Prior to Green Friday, keep an eye on the products you need and would like to buy at a discount. Because will these products really be offered at a discount? You often see prices being pushed up in the months leading up to Black Friday in order to give an easy extra (disguised) discount!
Join the Green Friday movement yourself and buy only sustainable products during Black Friday. This way you can still give something back to the environment and stimulate the transition to a world where products are made of sustainable materials and resources. Many retailers participate in Green Friday by offering a discount only on their sustainable products.
There are companies that take a rigorous approach during Green Friday and close their doors. Unfortunately, as a small clothing brand in which we are trying to build our name as best we can, we do not have that opportunity yet. Besides, we want to become the biggest clothing brand in Europe for long with a collection consisting only of products made with sustainable materials. For that reason we have to do something and that is why during Green Friday we are giving a small discount of 20%. We cannot ignore the laws of the market. If we want to keep growing and make even more clothes made from sustainable materials we will have to keep attracting even more customers.
An ideal entry moment for you as a consumer, because with December month around the corner, our pants are also very good to give as gifts!
